If you ask me, auto-update is one of the things that people use every day, yet aren’t aware of it. Whether it be from apps on your phone, to apps in your web browser, or security updates for your PC. A majority of the time it does it’s thing, with sometimes a little input from you and off you go. What a time saver it is!
… That is until auto-update decides to cause some issues.
A few weeks back, I did a bulk upgrade of some plugins on here. Nothing unusual about it, I hadn’t logged on it a while, it seemed the fastest way to do so. Until about the 5th update, when it froze. I assumed it was just taking it’s time, so left it for about 20 minutes (quite a long time for a plugin to update if you ask me). Still, nothing. So I opened a new tab, it turned out the plugin didn’t update. So I pressed update again, still, nothing.
Now ever since this issue, with this one plugin I have always had to manually update that plugin. A little bit of a hassle, yes, download the plugin to my computer, uploading the files to the server. It wastes time to be fair, especially when it could be done a lot faster by pressing one button!
However, it was today I felt the pain of a manual update. It wasn’t a plugin, this time, it was the site itself that required an update. So, as I do, I press the update button… Nothing. I waited a while, still, nothing. Opened the same page in another tab, prompted to update again, I pressed it, the same happened.
I soon realised a manual update was needed. Now this was slightly more crucial than a plugin, so a back-up was in order, in case something went wrong. This is where time was added, the back-up, the download, the upload… You get the idea.
So coming to my point, do you think we rely on auto-update so much? Could you really imagine manually updating things all the time? Do let me know your thoughts.
