We’re always told to back-up files and keep files in a safe place where we can remember. But how many of us actually do? Especially when we have multiple devices, do we just make the assumption it’s safe on one? Or back-up to another, but forget to back-up the updated files that you’ve changed on one machine? Well this morning, I was certainly annoyed at myself for not backing-up!
What should have been a 5-10 minute job, turned into a rather long one! You see, I wanted to change the colour of my favicon (that little image to the left of the URL, the blue “ID0” one). There was nothing wrong with it, I just wanted to make it a little bit lighter, to suit the new theme a little more. Others probably wouldn’t notice, but it was annoying me!
Anyway, to the point. I loaded up the files I had, only to find that I had files in folders here, folders there. Folders on external drives – just here, there and everywhere really! The worst part of it all, after looking through a bunch of folders, I didn’t have that one! I had older ones, ones never used. But not that exact one! Now yes, I could have downloaded the image and changed the colour. But the if you’ve tried working with a 16×16 image, you know how difficult that can be. Also, the file I was looking for had the original text. So all I would have to do would be change the font colour, so overall it would look nice – all be coloured in!
At first, I thought “Eh, no worries I’ll just re-write it with a new colour”… Except this is where the second problem arose. I couldn’t remember the font I used and when I created the logo, it was on a different machine, which I no longer had. Oh, this did cause issues. I went searching around to see if I could find it, looking through back-ups, but I only had “older” fonts in there. I hadn’t done a recent back-up! I was becoming more and more frustrated by it.
In the end, I gave up. Found a similar font and started from scratch. But all this brings me to my point, and I’m sure I’ve said it before, but backing-up is crucial! Especially after changing a file. I spent about two hours this morning, most of searching, instead of 15 minutes. But I know, we all find backing-up tedious, especially if we have a lot of files! But this is twice I’ve made this mistake of not backing up and believe me – it’s very frustrating, especially when your files can be all over the place!
