What is it that makes us, living, human beings, old? The age of us? Or the time we’ve been around. I admit, they sound like the same thing, right? But when you look into depth about it, they’re really not.
If you go and visit your grandparents, or perhaps parents they might be around their 80s, does that make them old? Commonly yes, but how old does that make them? If you’re 80 year old person is as fit as a fiddle, who can jump around, jog daily, are they still old? Well, yes, I guess they are. I’m not here to say old people are young, though some may well be, if anything, I’m here to say that young people… Might be old. But why? What makes me as a teenager, say that young people might well be old. For starters, they way we act, the way I act.
Think about it, really think about it, if somebody say’s the phrase “When I was your age…” you instantly think that persons old, correct? I know I do, (Well, to be fair, I often think “Here we go again”, but nevertheless I still think of that person as old) and this is where time comes in. A few weeks back I was talking to one of my sisters friends father (It’s early, so I’ll say “some guy”). Anyway, we were talking about children and how they would be taught in the future, from home, in front of an electronic device, schooling won’t necessarily be a thing of the past, but physically going to school will, I then thought to myself “Oh, bloody hell I’ll be her brother and I get the chance to say ‘when I was young’”, which made me feel partially old.
Now of course, that’s looking into the future, but let’s take a look at now, are teenagers today classes as old? Using myself as an example I can already say to myself “When I was your age we had a brick of a TV”, or “When I was young you had to buy a video to watch cartoons whenever you want, not view it on iPlayer”. This is what I really mean by “time”, just me saying that makes me feel somewhat old, and I’m only in my teens still, yet I’m sure people younger than me can say the same thing to there younger siblings, which, although you may not be, feel old.
Which brings me back to my original point, with technology flying by as it does, what still classes us as old? The time we’ve been around to see changes, or the age we really are? Or, are we just never old? Do you not see people as old at all?
